Kate McCue was appointed by Celebrity Cruises in 2015 to captain a mega-ship – the first woman to do so. Almost five years later, an all-female crew is joining her, just in time for International Women’s Day.
The Celebrity Edge ship will leave the dock on March 8, 2020, which is International Women’s Day. The 26-strong female crew will take the ship from Florida to the Eastern Caribbean.
According to Celebrity, women only make up 2% of the world’s navy and mariners. The 26-strong female team is made up of women from all over the world, including Ghana, Bulgaria, Finland, and the U.S.
From a Q&A panel to an art auction and gallery exhibition featuring art by women, there’s going to be a lot to honor women throughout the journey.
CEO of Celebrity Cruises Lisa Lutoff-Perlo says that over the past few years, they have “worked hard to diversify the crew” so that more women can work in the industry. With this type of opportunity to set a precedent, it looks like more women will be eager to put their hands up for the role.
